I Got Spanked As a Kid

[image/video - please log in to see this content]

Along with most of my friends I was spanked as a kid. It's funny but it never occured to us to question the right of our parents to spank us. I think part of the reason was that we all read comics like the Beano and the Topper in which there were naughty children like Dennis the Menace and Beryl the Peril who often ended up being spanked with a slipper usually by dad. Many of the comics were produced in Scotland which was very much pro-CP in those days. We thought it funny to see spanking in comics. Not nearly so funny when it happened to you!

Yes! @Aspies19:

@jennypenny It might of been the Comicbook Code or its UK equivalent that set how things could be depicted in childrens comics. I suspect that's why it was always show 'over clothing' although we all knew different.

@CatFan10 It was a comic book code. If you look carefully at some of the cartoons from the 1950's the child being spanked is either fully clothed or in their underwear. I have seen several depictions of kids in their underwear over a lap being spanked.

I can well remember the episodes where Dennis got the "Demon Slipper" or Minnie The Minx got an otk handspanking in the Beano. It was just a regular part of childhood life back then as was the tossed back board rubber.

@CatFan10 Yes. And the tossed back board rubber was much more dangerous!

A spanking following mischief seemed as normal as night following day. Those few parents who didn't spank their wayward youngsters were seen as not exercising proper control.

@jackcros: My friends and I were forever up to some mischief and usually getting spanked for it. It was part of the game, to see what we could get away with.

@Sharon: They now call that approach "risk assessment."

I agree. When you see spanking portrayed in comic strips, as well as cartoons, movies, and tv shows, as a kid, you see this as part of growing up.
Oh yes, this is a cute story about "Little Iodine" https://similarworlds.com/8947632-I-Spank-My-Children/793370-My-sister-tipped-me-off-to-this-cute-story-from

My parents never spanked me, so it was strange reading or hearing about kids getting spanked. I used to wonder what it might be like. Then one day at school I found out ... 😥

Can't understand why a real life spanking would not be as funny as seeing them in the comics. LOL

In the U.S. when I was growing up, the most I saw of spanking in any kind of media was in Tom and Jerry.
