Kate, I'm honestly a bit shocked and disturbed when I hear of people's stories about being physically beaten as children by parents. I come from five generations of career military with four siblings. We were never spanked or beaten for punishment. The same is true for my cousins and extended family network. Most of us turned out well and went into higher education, the military as officers, or the professions. So, I guess I just don't understand the purpose of beating a child other than to cause pain, shame, and humiliation.

Do you think you benefited from this kind of punishment? Did it make you more understanding in the treatment of your own children? More compassionate with others when their behavior was errant? Did it make you feel better as a person as you grew up?

Hi Lily, I really don't feel like I was ever beaten as a child. But I was spanked and do think I benefited from them. I had friends who weren't spanked and feel like it led to some bad choices I was able to avoid.

My spankings were embarrassing, but I didn't feel humiliated. My parents never gave me one with others present. Maybe a swat on the bottom when I was quite young, but never a formal spanking.

As I got older, it was embarrassing to be punished that way, but it also reminded me that I wasn't as grown up as I thought. I didn't need to be spanked often, but when I did get one,I think it reinforced the parent and child relationship.

I'd be the first to agree that corporal punishment can be used too often and that there is no excuse for it being too severe. That wasn't my experience though.
