We use this as punishment for our children. It helps to improve their hand writing, they have to think about what they did wrong and it keeps them busy.

I found when I had to write lines, my handwriting got progressively worse, and if I misspelled a word one hundred times, that's how it is spelled for the rest of time.
I'd rather kids be given an assignment to read a chapter of a book and rewrite it in their own words,,to show comprehension. If a child can't learn he or she did something wrong by being given a sensible punishment then no amount of punishment can teach them anything. Saying I will not chew gun 100 times is just a time waster and teaches nothing.
