It actually doesn't exist in the US anymore and hasn't for a long time.
It originally was for anything deemed excessively violent, profane, or sexual. Robocop was so violent it originally had an X rating. It became popular with some movie producers because it was the only raring that could be self applied. So to save on costs having their film rated, they would release a film that they new would be rated R as rated X, if it did well as such, they would have it rated by the MPAA to get it into more theaters.
Porno producers would use the rating since they could self apply it over just releasing their films unrated. Films don't have to be rated, it just helps get them into theaters and marketed. Pron producers utilized the X rating to make their movies seem more scandalous. It then became so synonymous with porn studios worked with the MPAA to drop it and create a new rating for the category NC-17. NC-17 is now what X used to mean and X is just a non-existent rating used by porno companies to market their porn and drive the point that it is porn and nothing else
