I had to write multiplication tables into the hundreds. I don’t recall the exact number of lines.

@MissMeghan The teacher checked the sums. The punishments I received were for talking with classmates during lessons.

@Bowenw well, I presume it was an effective punishment 😉

@MissMeghan It was effective and I did learn multiplication tables very well.

None. I.dod at the beginning, but he realized it didn't work.

@MrsRachelEvans i.didmt do anything to change his mind. He felt like it was a waste of time mine and his.
MrsRachelEvans · 31-35, F
@Klt3sHottie my father always said I was wasting my own time doing lines. He would leave me do them in a set time
MissMeghan · 46-50, F
@MrsRachelEvans Time you spend learning to become a better person is _never_ wasted. What was the maximum amount of time you spend on writing lines during a single punishment?

Writing out in chalk on the blackboard 4 pages of the Hobbit.
The black board would hold about a page
You then had it checked by teacher and then had to wipe it out.
Then next page…

I remember 800 lines once
MissMeghan · 46-50, F
@MrsRachelEvans Do you remember the line written? 🖊️

Actual writing of lines, the worst was 500, given to me by my history teacher because I was late with an assignment. What made it worse still was I miscounted and only did 498 lines, plus I made mistakes (doubled-up words or missed words). The guy actually counted the lines and read every one of them to pick out the mistakes. He then accused me of being slovenly and disrespectful and caned me!
Other written punishments were copying out 2 or 3 pages from the Bible. I've no idea how many 'lines' that would have amounted too, but it was tedious!

I don't remember doing more than 100 at a time - but we're talking about nearly 60 years ago... 😁
ArtieKat · M
@MissMeghan No, I don't. Probably stuff like "I must not.... &c. &c."
MissMeghan · 46-50, F
@ArtieKat clearly they did not assign enough lines or you WOULD remember them! 😆

I can only recall one instance of this happening, and it was just my biological father being unreasonable over a misunderstanding.
He was great at that.

I don’t remember getting more than 50. I set them as a prefect too, I think only 25.
Billyt · 61-69, M
I remember writing 100 lines many times with “I will not…. Etc”
Hated doing them

I had to write 300 once
“I will not chew gum and talk back to the teacher”
That didn’t teach me a damn thing

@SW-User Either the chew gum was too good or not enough lines ... 😆
