Will we ever have a giant space railgun that can blow up incoming asteroids?

I think if money wasn't in the game, I believe our research on dealing with an asteroid headed for Earth would be further along than it is.

What I mean is, we have all this great technology. If protecting humans and Earth is a big deal, then why does money have to be a thing? The way I see it, if people just figured it out instead of worrying about getting paid, because at the end of the day, if it costs $300 quadrillion to come up with a solution to an asteroid headed for earth, well none of that will matter if it hits the planet.

We have blockheads working in these institutions. No one gets it. Their lust for money won't matter if an asteroid does hit this planet. If I were in that position I would say, okay team let's figure this out. Then I would say on national TV, we're going to figure out this asteroid thing, and we aren't worrying about getting money because saving the planet is more important than money. But we still need to eat, so please anything you can donate for us will help out.
