The Shape of the Shadow Within

The flickering bulb in the hallway cast a dim, yellowish light that lazily crept into the bedroom through the narrow gap beneath the door. Clara lay on her back, eyes wide open, staring up at the ceiling where old plaster mapped out strange, threatening patterns. It was six dozen minutes past midnight, but sleep was a myth inside this settled head. In fact, she had been operating in a state of quiet alarm for months.

She was thirty-six, yet sometimes she felt like a brittle old woman whose bones remembered more battles than could be considered bearable. She had thick, wavy black hair that now, scattered across the pillow, formed a dark halo around her face, and full, mature feminine shapes that had nonetheless lost their softness in recent weeks under the assault of constant inner exhaustion. The pale skin on her arms and collarbones broke out in fine droplets of cold sweat every time something cracked in the house.

From outside the window, the monotonous tapping of raindrops against the windowsill drifted in. *Tap, tap, tap.* On top of that, a quiet, metallic clinking rose from the hallway—like someone scraping a fingernail against a brass doorknob.

"I didn't expect you this early," she muttered into the empty room. Her voice sounded raspy, as if shards of broken glass were stuck in it.

In the corner of the room, where the hallway light failed to reach and shadows bled together into a dense, liquid mass, something moved. Not a concrete shape, more a shift in the room's pressure. The air grew heavy, smelling of damp soil, old paper, and something metallic, like blood after rain.

*“I never left, Clara,”* echoed inside her head. It wasn’t the sound of spoken words, but a resonance within her skull, a deep bass that vibrated her dental enamel. *“Are you counting the days? Did you think that by buying those locks and pulling the drapes you’d erase what you are?”*

Clara sat up. The blanket slid down to her hips, revealing a tank top soaked with sweat across her back. In the corner by the wardrobe, the shadow began to stretch. It looked like a human silhouette, but far too tall, with unnaturally long fingers twitching in a convulsive rhythm.

"Get out," she breathed firmly. She tried to sound tough, but the fingers on her left hand curled frantically, digging nails into her palm until she felt a sharp, welcome pain. "Leave me alone."

The shadow moved closer to the bed. The floorboards beneath it didn't even creak, but Clara heard that strange, quiet rustle, like insects crawling over dry foliage. *Swish, swish, swish.* The air in the room thickened so much that breathing became labored, as if she were inhaling water. Every breath carried with it a peculiar, hot wave that traveled up her throat into her stomach.

*“You know you’re mine,”* the inner voice continued, closer now, almost brushing her ear though no one physically stood in the corner. *“That darkness inside you… that’s not my doing. It was there before I came. I just give it a name.”*

Clara jerked and bit her lip until it bled. That sentence hurt harder than a physical blow. She knew the truth. All those glasses she used to break, all those days she lay on the floor wishing she didn't exist, hadn't been mere flukes of bad luck. It was rooted deep within her. That drawn-in abyss, that strange, perverse intimacy with her own destruction.

The shadow now stood at the edge of the bed. On her skin, she felt an icy draft that oddly contrasted with the inner heat spreading upward from her lower belly. It was terrifying and yet... intoxicating. Her body, long accustomed to solitude and fear, reacted to that pressure in a peculiar way. Her heart pounded furiously in her chest, the arteries in her neck pulsed, and her muscles tensed to the point of snapping. Fear and arousal melted together inside her into a single, dangerous fluid coursing through her veins.

"Stop it," she whispered, but her strength to refuse was gone. Her own body was betraying her. With every further step that invisible entity took toward the mattress, her breathing quickened.

*Scratch!*

A fingernail—or something resembling one—grazed the wooden headboard right next to her head. That sound drove through her spine like an electric shock. Clara closed her eyes, tilted her head back, and drove the fingers of both hands into the sheet so hard the fabric began to tear.
