A sudden change in plans by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has raised eyebrows just days before the November 3 midterm elections.
Rubio was initially expected to accompany President Donald Trump to an Ohio campaign rally in support of Republican Senator Jon Husted and gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. The State Department had confirmed his travel plans, saying he would attend in his capacity as Trump's national security adviser.
But the department subsequently reversed course, saying there had been a schedule change without offering further details. The development came just a day after Rubio joined Trump at a campaign event in Lubbock, Texas, where the President publicly praised him and invited him on stage.
Rubio has generally stayed away from partisan campaigning while serving as America's top diplomat, making his brief appearance alongside Trump particularly notable.
