Justice Department sues to block Alaska results if Sullivan loses

The Hill reports:

BY JULIA MUELLER

The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit that aims to block certification of the Senate election in Alaska if incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan loses his reelection bid.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the district of Alaska, argues that a win for Democrat Mary Peltola could be blocked by the controversial appearance on the ballot of a candidate with the same name as the incumbent.

The filing alleges that Daniel J. Sullivan, who goes by Dan Sullivan, entered the race as a Republican “with the intention of misleading” the incumbent’s supporters, and that his inclusion on the ballot would cause voter confusion.

“Should Alaska certify any electoral results tainted by the inclusion on the ballot of Daniel J. Sullivan … the State and its officers will fail in its obligation to protect the integrity of its election,” the filing reads.

The fight for control of the Senate could come down to Alaska this fall. The Last Frontier is considered a solidly red state that President Trump won by double digits in the last presidential race, but Peltola narrowly leads in recent polls of Senate fight.

Decision Desk HQ’s polling averages put Peltola up by roughly 2 percentage points over Sullivan, with a “lean Democratic” forecast. Cook Political Report still considers the race a “toss up,” with early voting underway.

Alaska Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher launched an investigation earlier this year into Daniel J. Sullivan’s run, citing “credible allegations” that he was running as a spoiler and concluded that he couldn’t appear on the ballot.

She noted the political newcomer’s recent switch to the Republican Party and his ties to a political consultant for Peltola, though Peltola’s camp has said it has no involvement with either Sullivan campaign.

Daniel J. Sullivan appealed to the Superior Court, arguing that Alaskan law does not regulate the “private motivations that draw individuals to declare or campaign for office.”

In a statement at the time, he contended that the attempts to remove him from the ballot “create the impression that the state government is being used to protect an incumbent senator from facing competition at the ballot box.”

A Superior Court judge eventually ruled that the challenger could remain on the ballot for the state’s Aug. 18 primary, from which both Sullivans advanced. But the Justice Department had reportedly launched an investigation into the Dan J. Sullivan campaign.

The ballots for next month’s general election list both “Dan S. Sullivan,” with a note highlighting his party and incumbent status, and “Daniel J. Sullivan Jr,” who is listed without a party affiliation.

Alaska uses ranked-choice voting for the general election.
The Hill has reached out to both Sullivan campaigns for comment.

My comments:

My GAWD, how incredibly LAME is Demented Donnie’s DO(in)J if they are blaming their own voters for being too DUMB (note the correct spelling of “Dumb”—not Demented Donnie’s kindergarten level misspelling) to even know who they are voting for? Especially when their preferred candidate is already the incumbent Senator! Are they really telling their voters that they are that stupid?!?!?

But this does signal that they as a party are unwilling to accept the results of a free and fair election that does not go their way.

If they were honest with themselves they’d admit that the current POTUS IS UNFIT AND A WILDLY UNPOPULAR FOOL!

@Degbeme Reminds me of the old bit ...

"He's as honest as the day is long."
"The days are getting awfully short around here."
@ChipmunkErnie SPOT ON!

Holding on to the righteous hope that the days get considerably longer after the midterms!

@KunsanVeteran Thank you

Lemme get this straight, tRump thinks an election should be nullified if a candidate lied in a big way during the campaign?? SERIOUSLY???

We will end inflation and make America affordable again, and we’re going to get the prices down, we have to get them down. It’s too much. Groceries, cars, everything. We’re going to get the prices down.

“When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on day one,” Trump continued. “We will drill, baby, drill,” he said, referring to increasing domestic oil production. “That’s going to bring down prices of everything.”

@whowasthatmaskedman …you never know…
@bijouxbroussard Just imagine if that had actually happened in 2024 how much better off America and the whole world would be…

And all those young girls in Iran would still be alive as well as those Venezuelan fishermen, too…

I don't see how any judge wouldn't throw this suit out.

1. It's incumbent upon the voter to know who he is voting for.

2. You can't prevent a person from running for office under his legal name. Indeed it's probably required.

3. Even if Daniel J Sullivan admitted he had ulterior motives it wouldn't disqualify him or change 1 and 2 above.
@MoveAlong SPOT ON!

Not to mention the clearly nefarious MOTIVE of tRUMP’s DO(in)J here! Nothing like disenfranchising more than half the voters in our largest state!

@KunsanVeteran He probably knows the suit will fail. He likely is planning on appeal after appeal and filing an appeal on the last day. This could be to prevent the Senator from being seated for a long time.
‘This is a joke lawsuit': REACTION to DOJ suing to block Alaska Senate results if GOP loses

[media=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEgfk920Bss]

The DOJ is suing to potentially block Alaska's Senate results if the Democratic candidate loses due to two of the Republican candidates having the same name. MS NOW Senior Legal Reporter Lisa Rubin, Co-host of MS NOW's "Morning Joe" Jonathan Lemire, New York Times Opinion Columnist David French and Staff Writer for The New Yorker Susan Glasser join Katy Tur to discuss the lawsuit.

My comments:

tRUMP has admitted to telling his DO(in)J to pull this illegal stunt

Didnt Eddie Murphy do a movie about that??😷

MAGA will do ANYTHING to steal the election. :(

@bijouxbroussard I thought January 6 was about them knowing they'd lost and Trump trying to overthrow the vote.
@ChipmunkErnie Well, basically, yes. But if they’d admitted that they couldn’t claim to be patriots. 🤨
@bijouxbroussard They claim to be Christians yet they ignore the teachings of Christ and replace them with heresy; they claim to be Patriots yet they commit a violent insurrection at the Capitol; they claim to support Law and Order yet they wounded over 140 Capitol police officers in their insurrection…

So they will block the results if their candidate loses ?
This is downright Orwellian…
@bijouxbroussard They are asking the court to disenfranchise however many votes for both of the other candidates because they didn’t do a decent job of establishing name recognition of their candidate!

Shameful!

Especially since their preferred candidate is ALREADY in that office and running for RE-ELECTION!

How LAME can they be???
