@IM5688 Violent crime is WAY down across the country. That fact debunks a popular right-wing lie that crime is "exploding."

Some suggest crime numbers are falling because we're not apprehending criminals. Just the opposite: incarceration rates rose as crime reports dropped.

For some reason, right-wingers like to pretend that New York City is a very dangerous place. Let's debunk that myth.

NYC has 538.9 violent crimes per 100K population. That puts it 59th on the list of violence in US cities; exceeded by Jacksonville (631), St Petersburg (698), Miami (720), and Orlando (744), to name a few [data from wikipedia].

In fact, there are five whole states that have higher rates of violent crime per capita! I'm talking to YOU, Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, & Tennessee!!

Disclaimer: I do not, nor have I ever, resided in New York City nor New York state, although I have visited both city and state upon occasion. I collected this NYC data because I often see NYC wrongly badmouthed.

Fact is, many rural communities have higher rates of untimely death than NYC. Here's a little secret about living in rural areas: the motor vehicle death rate is far higher than urban areas. Drunk driving, winding roads, foul weather, and just the overall time spent in a car.

It's kinda shocking to compare automotive death rates with murders. Automobiles make rural areas FAR more dangerous than urban areas!
@ElwoodBlues Conservatives have never cared about the actual facts. Just how they feel.

@ElwoodBlues One of your charts goes up to 2023, then up to 2020, 2018, and again 2020. In case you hadn't noticed, we are in the latter half of 2025.
@IM5688 If you've got data that the 30 drop in crime rates has suddenly reversed, then by all means present it!!

But you don't have any data, do you? Just a tiny nit to pick.
@IM5688 2025 doesn't magically change a 30 year trend because of your feelings and there is no evidence to suggest anything has changed. In fact all the data we have shows the drop is continuing.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Your Prison chart shows the number of people being jailed going down in 2020. Could that be partially because they released half the prison population due to COVID?
Also, your Murder chart shows increases in murders.

@IM5688 Oh and fun fact. When you adjust for population Red cities have more of a crime problem.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Underlining that:

Gun homicide rates in our 300 most populous cities; separated into red vs blue states. It's worth pointing out here that STATES, not cities, make gun licensing and registration laws.

https://www.americanprogressaction.org/article/cities-in-blue-states-experiencing-larger-declines-in-gun-violence-in-2023/

WOW! Cities in blue states tend to be safer!! Proving that gun safety laws work!!
@ElwoodBlues Another thing about that the right hates to acknowledge is their favorite scapegoat Chicago is within driving distance of red states with laughable straw purchase laws.
