@Quimliqer When it was written, it was stating that the colonists had the same right for self-governance as other nations. It took on the meaning of individual equality well after it was written. And that was a little shaky considering that slavery still existed.

@Quimliqer Jefferson addressed black slavery in his draft of the Declaration of Independence, but the southern colonies threatened to vote against it if the language wasn’t omitted.
