I Think The Tea Party People Are Idiots

Sara Palin and her views on religion.

Sarah Palin has long been a bete noir of the left, but she has always been able to count support from grass-roots conservatives. At least, until now.

During a speech to members of the National Rifle Association this weekend, Ms Palin cracked a joke that - while being well-received by the crowd - didn't go over as well with many Christian commentators, many of whom considered her an ally.

"They obviously have information on plots to carry out jihad," she said, referring to muslim prisoners. "Oh, but you can't offend them, can't make them feel uncomfortable, not even a smidgen. Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptise terrorists."

Ooops!

It was a good line and far less offensive than the Daniel Pearl "baptism". Since when is al Qaeda accorded so much respect t that we can't joke about them?
Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
She is joking about religion, isn't she? Baptism for terrorists? Not funnu in the slightest.

Why bring up Daniel Pearl?
Redredred
It's not my fault you have no sense of humor or sense of proportion. If Gov. Palin's comments offend you, what was your reaction to Daniel Pearl's execution? BTW,the use of "baptism" as in " baptism by fire" isn't generally considered irreligious or offensive. The word is in general usage. Grow up or stop trying to use a joke for political disparagement; it won't work, most of us see the humor.
Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
As a confirmed Islamophobe I expected you to defend Palin. I didn't however expect you to use the ridiculous analogy to "baptism of fire" which is clearly not what she intended at all.

Daniel Pearl's execution was a horrific crime. Why are you trying to make cheap political points out of it?
Redredred
It's "baptism by fire" but I don't expect you to pay attention to details. islam is a virus on humanity completely incompatible with the ideals of freedom upon which which a classically liberal republic must be founded. Palin exercised her freedom of speech and Pearl showed islam's respect for freedom of religion. If you are offended by her joke regarding islamonazis perhaps a review of Pearl's fate will put the issue in perspective. Perhaps.
Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
Incorrect. The common term (non-religious) is baptism of fire.

Palin is a complete idiot and the NRA are stupid to give her a platform to speak.

I ask again becuse you refuse to explain.....why bring Daniel Pearl into it? Was he a member of the far right Tea Party or the NRA? No.
Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
Ps she didn't use the term Baptism of/by fire. She used the single word baptism. She clearly meant to refer to the religious practice of baptising people by water. She obviously referred to it further by bringing up water boarding. Funny how all you idiots can't or won't undrstand plain English.
Redredred
Okay, have a grown up read this to you and explain all the hard words. I assumed, very optimistically, that you had sufficient intellect to make a logical inference; I was clearly wrong. Palin made a joke about terrorists. Terrorists brutally killed Pearl. My point in reminding you about that was to clearly point out that the joke, which you found rough, was by no means too rough, given the nature of the butt of that joke. Also, I originally used the (correct) expression "baptism BY fire" which you misquoted. It's true both expressions exist in English but you misquoted me. But then, we've already discussed your competence.
Redredred
I offered the use of a comparable expression to highlight that the word "baptism" has a non-religious usage in standard English. God you're dense.
Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
Palin didn't use either term, did she?
Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
Palin clearly meant the religious use of the word, as I have just explained to you.
Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
"Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptise terrorists."

Palin's exact words. Are you so stupid in real life?
Redredred
I wasn't there so I can't comment on all of her comments, however (and again) I offered the use of a comparable expression to highlight that the word "baptism" has a non-religious usage in standard English.
Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
And again I point out that you are wrong. She clearly used the term in a religious connotation. Obviously you can't excuse that so you seek to pretend it didn't happen that way.
Redredred
You simply have the density of granite. It was a fucking joke. Can you understand that? You're not obligated to enjoy the joker but pretending it was an offensive religious slur is just way too much of a reach. You not closing the sale here buddy.
westsideblues1
yes Baptist nearly drown their followers to Baptize them.
westsideblues1
the word *baptism* is used often in southern region of America !
Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
It was an attempt at humour. It wasn't a joke. Given up on trying to pretend she meant baptism in a non-religious way yet?

It was an offensive comment on so many levels. You can joke about anything, but if you are goinf to do that you have to make sure what you say is funny!
Redredred
It is funny, you're just as typically humor impaired as any of the leftist, knee-jerk reactionaries who use political correctness as a substitute for thinking. If you think vast numbers of religious people were offended by her joke, cite the outrage. Did the southern baptist convention condemn her? Who besides you and her other political opponents seeking to make political hay out of anything at all, are pretending to be offended. If John Stewart had said it you would have laughed at it. Now lie and tell me you wouldn't have.
Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
You are making a lot of assumptions based on very little evidence.

Is the illegal act of waterboarding a joke?

Is the religious act of baptism a joke?

Was her statement funny in the slightest?

That would be a "no" to all three questions.

Carry on with your stupid ill thought out support for a cretin, it's your right, but don't expect anyone else to go along with you.
Redredred
If you weren't so humor impaired you'd understand that virtually everything is a fit subject for humor. Tragedy plus time is humor. Its a inherent deficit of the left that they don't get the joke. If your side had a sense of humor you'd see how ridiculous your policies are.
Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
I don't have a side.

You clearly do....far right and heading out further.

I find it extremely amusing you think Palin is worth defending!

Can I make a joke about Daniel Pearl?.......something like a comparison with "bring me the head of John the Baptist"? Is that funny?
Redredred
In time it will be. And despite your claim you do have a side; the bottom. You're simply trying, pointlessly, to create some faux outrage over a joke. Its really pitiful and almost a joke in itself.
Mikemcneil · 61-69, M
That's where we disagree. It can never be funny.
