A former Las Vegas youth pastor, David Vander Meer, has been charged with murder and insurance fraud nearly two decades after his wife, Bernadette Vander Meer, died in a fall from the Angels Landing trail in Zion National Park in 2006 FOX 13 Utah+1.
Background of the 2006 Incident
On the morning of August 22, 2006, the couple hiked to the summit of Angels Landing, a 4.8-mile, steep, and narrow trail known for its high fatality rate. Bernadette, 28, was a worship leader and casino employee; David was a church youth pastor. According to his account, David was setting up a camera for sunrise photos when he turned away to move backpacks and heard Bernadette scream as she fell FOX 13 Utah+1. He claimed to have run down the trail to call 911. Her body was found hours later at the base of the trail.
At the time, investigators considered it an accident, but the case was closed with limited evidence.
