Trump is pushing Trade schools

I think this is a great Idea. It won't be long until no one can do anything for themselves, and
they will be forced to pay big bucks to the skilled individuals that can do things.

I grew up with a WWII dad that did everything himself. Built our garage himself, etc..I am not as skilled, but I have always
swapped out water heaters, plumbing fixtures, electrical stuff like putting in ceiling fans, etc...

I believe in the near future trades people are going to be very wealthy.

In the past, trades people made decent money and could own a home, save money, become upwardly mobile by working a second job and mothers stayed home with kids through their formative years. Ahhhh the good old days. Trade schools are important and I think it's a great move on his part.

@carpediem

So trades people live in poverty?
You need to check your information again!
carpediem · 61-69, M
@pdockal I said that? I wish you'd show me where. I'm a blue collar guy myself. I own a commercial general contracting company. I hire trades both union and non-union every day. My father was a carpenter. Today, most trades people to get ahead have two wage earners in a married household. That's just a fact.

@carpediem

You said in the past they needed 2 jobs to make ends meet
Non union trades people make less (trade schools)
Union make a decent living

We don't need trade schools
We need to promote union apprenticeship
carpediem · 61-69, M
@pdockal No we don't. Unions are not the total solution. You're exposing yourself as a union stooge. Try looking at both sides of an argument. We need trade schools and guess what? They're going to be supported and expanded.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@carpediem

Never said they where
However we have a system in place to train trades peaple that doesn't create debt for he student ... schools create debt ... will they get an associates degree after completing school ...

Stooge .... really ... grow up ... is that the best attempt at an insult you can come up with .... usually the immature & uneducated stoop to attempting insults ......

@pdockal But the message still stands. Unions are not for everyone. Deal with it
pdockal · 56-60, M
@carpediem

Why deal with it ?
Why allow others to disparage my union ?

What makes you right ?

Were you in a trade union ?

Do you have any idea where the working man would be without unions & the protections you have (laws) that were fought for by unions & their membership ?

I make a great living
Lots make s great living
We didn't start out in debt (schools put you in debt)
You could join right out of high school
Benefits are amazing
They will pay for college after you finish apprenticeship so you can move on if you choose

@pdockal I was in a trade union. Carpenters. So was my father. He got screwed out of his pension. It was awful.

I hired union contractors every day. To me, I don’t care if someone is union or not. I base my hiring on merit and cost. If a company can do the job for a better price they win. That’s how I get work, being competitive.

I have union actions against me all the time. I get threatened with pickets or demonstrations. I don’t care because I know how to legally deal with them.

I have friends who are union, or were and now get pensions. I’m not against unions, but they’re certainly not the beat all end all saviors. Generally, the BA’s act like thugs trying to intimidate people to get a “piece of the action”. That quote was told to me by a business agent. If they can be competitive I’ll hire them. But only when they sign my contract which states I have the right to replace them if their people don’t show due to a union picket.

I’ve had plenty of experience with unions from a viewpoint most are not privy to.

@carpediem

Figures you were in the carpenters union
But sounds like you never embrace it
You sound like you were shop rat

So you don't care if workers are being paid subpar wages & no benefits ?

Lowest bid isn't always the most competent/skilled workers or the safest workers
carpediem · 61-69, M
@pdockal I wasn’t a shop rat. I was a framing carpenter on a field crew. And you’re wrong about me caring about what wages the employees make. Your ignorance shows that you don’t really know beyond what your union bosses are telling you. Most contractors I hire that are nonunion. Give better packages to their employees than unions can offer. Why? Because the benefits are so expensive that a non-union contractor can offer better benefits for less money

Most have excellent 401(k) packages that employees contribute to and employers also support and contribute to. For instance, my employees have hundreds of thousands of dollars in accounts that they control now and forever. They get profit-sharing, they get vehicle expenses, and they’re paid right up there with any other union employee..

What do you know about Lois bid? Are you a contractor? Do you own your own business? You first have to get the job. The reason many union contractors are non-competitive are the work rules not the wages. Some of the favorite union contractors I hire are able to go back to the unions and request modified work rules for various projects to compete with non union companies. That’s how it works in real life.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@carpediem

Why would a union shop have to request modified work rules (translates to lower wages & poorer working conditions) if the non union shop they are competing with pay better ?

You just proved my point
The only reason a union shop requests modified union work rules is to downgrade
carpediem · 61-69, M
@pdockal Unfortunately, you don't know what you're talking about. Work rules mean things like, a painter can do more painting per day. A mason contractor doesn't need to have the same ratio of laborers per bricklayer. A concrete sub can finish more area of slab per man per day. All those things save money and allow the union companies to compete by letting their people produce as much as a non-union outfit generally does.

I think we're done with this conversation. You're dramatically ill prepared to have a serious discussion on the issue. Best of luck to you.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@carpediem

Your saying quotas ?
More of this per day ?
That's ludicris
I don't get paid on quotas

Yes this conversion is done because you've lost your mind
carpediem · 61-69, M
@pdockal I never said quota. You did. You don’t understand and likely never will. It’s ok, not your fault. You have zero frame of reference. See you on the picket line one day. I’ll be guy who will still be doing business as usual chuckling at spectacle. 😆
