Trump is pushing Trade schools

I think this is a great Idea. It won't be long until no one can do anything for themselves, and
they will be forced to pay big bucks to the skilled individuals that can do things.

I grew up with a WWII dad that did everything himself. Built our garage himself, etc..I am not as skilled, but I have always
swapped out water heaters, plumbing fixtures, electrical stuff like putting in ceiling fans, etc...

I believe in the near future trades people are going to be very wealthy.

Yeah...often people that cannot read or do math can follow a leak and repair it.
I don't remember an administration that didn't advocate for trade school educations.
The reasoning behind this administration's advocacy feels sinister.

@Carla Carla, Carla, Carla, you cannot be a tradesman without having good math and reading skills. Good Lord!

I have been in Construction for over 40 years, so I know what it takes. "Follow a leak and repair it"? 🤣 That is what
you narrow the trades down to? That's hilarious.

@DogMan i too have been in the trades my entire life. And having had a contractors license, building many sub divisions, commercial buildings, etc, etc., ive come across scores of tradespeople that couldn't read a word. Not the owners or forepeople, but many, many workers.

That isn't to say that you could pass a trade school curriculum without reading and math skills. But honestly, this administration wants their minions to reject higher learning. There are reasons for that whether you wish to acknowledge them or not.

@Carla i understand what you are saying. Hard to find quality tradespeople these days.
Carla · 61-69, F
@trollslayer pride in ones work is a rarity these days.
trollslayer · 46-50, M
@Carla i don’t even know if it is a lack of pride or a lack of skill. The good ones can anticipate issues. The rest simply follow the required procedure and are completely lost when a unique situation arises.

How do you know how much pride someone has?

Also: Please tell us who these tradespeople are that cannot read or write? Be specific.

I believe you are talking about laborers, not technicians.

@DogMan i had a very good conversation with a plumber a few weeks ago about water chemistry who was repairing my water heater. I was very impressed he knew what he was talking about - I have science degrees so I know when someone is BSing. He fixed my water heater under warranty and didn’t try and upsell or blame me. We need more like that.

@trollslayer Nice! I have an AC guy like that. AC guys in the desert southwest are heros. AC always has a way of going
out when it is 110 degrees, and those guys get up on the roof and fix them. 🥵
DogMan · 61-69, M
@trollslayer Poor Carla, when she calls a professional, she gets Clem Kadiddlehopper. When she says
her AC is out Clem says "Wots an AC?" And if her toilet backs up, he says "Wots a toilet" She must
live in a weird place. I'm glad she can read and write; she is probably the only one in her town.☹

@DogMan im sorry. I have the utmost respect for tradespeople. But if i tell "edgar" that i need him to go to a clients home and replace a toilet and replumb for a new sink and install it in the kitchen, "edgar" would be very able to do so and still be illiterate.
Same with the guy runni g new ductwork for hvac.
There are millions of contracting companies. Millions of owners and managers. But tens of millions of what you call laborers.
Who do you really think this administration wants? People who learn and use critical thinking skills or people that learn to turn tiny screws? Look at what they are trying to do to higher learning institutions. Realize they are creating an insurmountable gap. And people like you are cheering them on.
As i initially said...every administration in my recent memory has advocated for trade schools. They indeed teach trades.
But they don't teach anything else.

If i could recall the names of the many hundreds of people I've worked with over the years...well, i cannot.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@Carla This government wants entrepreneurs, and business owners like myself. Trump knows that they are the
people that build this country. To believe that he just wants "Screw turners" is very demeaning. Those are not
people that go to trade school. I never went to college, but I started a successful construction company over
20 years ago. You don't have to go to university to build a successful business. It's the people that start young
in the trades that move on to build their own companies. I knew one guy that went from college to starting a
construction company, he filed bankruptcy in a few short years because he did not have the practical
experience.
Carla · 61-69, F
@DogMan i get all of that...except the thing about trump. I did not go to college. I was successful in my working life as well. Not everyone is, no matter how hard they try. It's an aptitude thing.
Now that i am older, i wish i had gone to college. For anything. Even though i would still have chosen the same career path. College teaches more than the subject at hand.
Again...this administration wants screw turners. Those people that have no mechanical aptitude and were convinced that college is for indoctrinated soi boy losers.
So hey...what in trump's big beautiful, 1100 page bill will help you or other small businesses? Or tariffs? How will they help you?
Those things sure are helping the uber rich though, right?
DogMan · 61-69, M
@Carla Why do you keep confusing Trades people with screw turners?
Carla · 61-69, F
@DogMan sigh...heavy sigh.
