As an actual trans person who knows lots and lots and lots of actual trans people, regret rates are extraordinarily low.
Gender affirming surgery for trans kids is exceedingly uncommon.
Gender affirming care for kids consists of letting them use whatever name they want, dress in the way they want, and use preferred pronouns. Zero surgeries or medications.
Gender affirming care for early teens \ teens consists of puberty blockers to buy time to discuss hormone replacement therapy. Blockers are not used long term; they are used to prevent the onset of puberty.
Critically: puberty blockers are also prescribed to address all kinds of developmental disorders. Little known fact! They give some young women testosterone blockers and puberty blockers to keep them from being taller than average - and they've been doing that since the 70s!
Surgery for trans teens is VERY rare - plastic surgery for teens is more common. Mastectomies are the most common procedure, and are frequently given to non trans boys with gynocomastia (sp? - whatever - boys who grew breasts during puberty and are upset about it)
Hormone replacement therapy can start during teen years.
Suicidality being higher among trans people who have had surgeries is likely because the people who need the surgeries have more intense dysphoria to begin with. Coupled with how shitty some people are to trans folks, this shouldn't be a surprise.
Discussions around transition and medical care should not be the subject of public debate. It's a private matter for families and individuals to make decisions on with their doctors.

The people who decide to have this done to themselves face having to deal with the fact that their one and only body has literally been mutilated. It's horrifying and shocking and permanent.
Also, a person who feels they've been born in the wrong body to begin with are very depressed individuals, possibly with one or two OTHER untreated mental health issues. The hormone injections which are necessary after these mutilating surgeries would drive almost anyone to the point of suicide. They cause wild hormonal mood fluctuations.
Add to the above the fact that most Trans men really do NOT look like women. They go out into the dating scene thinking they will now find love, and that they will NOW suddenly become happy, and it almost never happens for them.

gender-affirming surgery
One of the greatest Catch-22's of all time...
If gender is as affirmed as they claim, why does it require medical intervention/surgery? 🤔

@wildbill83 Good question 🤔

"Gender-affirming surgery" a textbook "1984"-style term where its called the exact opposite of what it is - gender-denial surgery. (In "1984," the Ministry of Love tortured people, the Ministry of Peace conducted wars, the Ministry of Truth published lies, and so forth)

Believe it or not, not all Democrats support gender reassignment surgery.
