Why do Universities receive taxpayer money?

I know there are exceptions, like Hillsdale college, but why would others take money from
tax payers? Would they not be able to survive on their own with just tuitions? How does
Hillsdale do it?

Is it like NPR and PBS? Their business model is not strong enough to support itself?

Gobs of it…from the state governments and the federal government has a lot of grants that brings in huge amounts of money. There should be a lot more transparency with the assets that these university have. So many will leave their real estate to the university here so they have properties around the city that could be liquidated (if not used for university purposes) and that money used to fund projects.
