Rufus, is a dyed in the wool Liberal, but his words work very well upon the movement of Trump and Conservatism in politics these days criticizing on levels that Trump made his brand of politics about himself. I expect those who support Trump, see Rufus as being a liberal elite, which he may be by now, but I expect this was written in humility and the grace of, he was making the same fun of those Liberal elite.
