I Am Interested In Ww1 and Ww2

Today is the 75th anniversary of the battle of Iwo Jima

[media=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofSF463vpCQ]

Threescore and fifteen years ago,

On Iwo Jima's scoriac stones

Many a young man bled and died

For country, God or emperor.

Now looking at this desolate isle

Today, but little more remains

Than mostly unkempt monuments

And dreadful artifacts of war,

Rusting where they fell, so long ago.

what have we learned from going through those two wars?
was it worth the energy expended?
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@Shadyglow

The people at the time (mostly) thought so, and that's what counts (right or wrong) at any point in history.
Shadyglow · F
@Thinkerbell well JFK talked about Freedom on June 10 1963 and that never got old.
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@Shadyglow

JFK:
"Today the expenditure of billions of dollars every year on weapons acquired for the purpose of making sure we never need to use them is essential to keeping the peace."

Another way of saying Teddy Roosevelt's "Speak softly and carry a big stick."
Shadyglow · F
@Thinkerbell He was no TR!!
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@Shadyglow

That's right, he wasn't.
But that didn't stop him from using TR's idea in a speech.
Shadyglow · F
@Thinkerbell Yeah he really was quite TR at first, gung- ho feeling, join the Peace Corps and march on through the jungle to make a better world.

Be tough on Russia. In fact that tough-man debate speech won him the job He did that better than Nixon.

etc...
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@Shadyglow

Oh, no doubt JFK was a better speaker than Nixon (more handsome too).

But JFK seems not to have impressed Khrushchev during their meeting.
That's what made Khrushchev think he could get away with putting nuclear missiles in Cuba, leading to the crisis.
Shadyglow · F
@Thinkerbell well they ended up being great correspondents and as a result missiles were pulled and we relaxed that day in high school. I want another JFK as POTUS.
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@Shadyglow

Unfortunately, there are no JFKs in sight.
Or TRs either.
Shadyglow · F
@Thinkerbell would never ever want a TR type. NEVER

Plenty of gentle brilliant people able to be another JFK.
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@Shadyglow

Who?
Biden...? 🤔
Shadyglow · F
@Thinkerbell omg hell effing NO

someone real and alert and mindful and knowledgeable of the world from a personal standpoint..PT boat crises where JFK almost died but saved many other fellows, strongly influenced his character.

But I wont stick my neck by mentioning names. and no biden wasnt at the tip of my tongue

He is already in the rest home. Its nobody or Trump and I would prefer J.S. or D.K. and I will stop there, already 2 much

@Shadyglow Its never worth it and any lessons learnt have now clearly been completely forgotten by the majority in the USA. I would point out that Britain and Germany have clearly NOT FORGOTTEN those lessons but then you have to come close to losing a war to really understand the cost of war.
