Any theories on why the World Health Organization would skip the Greek letter "Xi" when naming the new Covid variant?

They couldn't use, "Nu" because it would turn into an Abbott and Costello routine.

Costello: So whats the name for this new variant?
Abbott: Nu
Costello:I know it's new, but what's it's name?
Abbott: Nu
Costello: I know it's new, but didn't they give it a name?
Abbott: Yes, the nu variant.
Costello: But all the other variants had names.
Abbott: Right
Costello: So why didn't they give this one a name?
Abbott: They did.
Costello: Then why won't you tell me the name?
Abbott: I did tell you, the variant is Nu.
