If there were to be a nuclear attack on the U.S. by another country what places in the U.S. would they strike?

So I have been keeping up with the news on Ukraine and Russia and I saw that Russia says that any country that interferes with what they are doing in Ukraine will face "consequences they have never seen." I also saw earlier today on the news something about Joe Biden and how the U.S. won't stop and that if Russia keeps getting bolder they will step in more and more. So seeing this makes me think that this situation may escalate further and possibly affect the U.S. in a much more severe way. If a nuclear war were to break out and the U.S. were to get nuked what parts would get nuked and why and which ones most likely won't get much nuking or will be unaffected?

If nuclear war broke out we are all dead.
But it is because Russia has them that Ukraine has been left helpless.
And if Ukraine had not been forced to give up the ones that they inherited from the Soviet Union this war would not be happening.
The USA will not fire one at Russia ( not first anyway)-but i fear Putin -who is clearly insane-would be mad enough.
And it would be aimed at Washington to take out the government.

@TheSirfurryanimalWales Nuclear doesn't work that way. It doesn't mean all are dead from direct blast. Lots of factors vary in.

@ravenwind43 The US used to drop nukes on American and Canadian troops. And Mississippi got nuked a couple of times.

@TheSirfurryanimalWales Interestingly, the Soviet Union did not have strike first contingency plans, but the US did.
