The breakthrough, in 2022, crucial to ever creating a fusion power plant, made headlines around the world. Humans had unlocked the power of the stars.

They have achieved ignition several times since then, and now the race is on to generate enough energy to consistently power a commercial fusion plant.

Bob Mumgaard is CEO and co-founder of Commonwealth Fusion Systems outside of Boston, one of more than two dozen fusion startups getting billions of dollars in funding from the government and investors. "It's gonna take time, it's gonna take work, but this is the birth of an industry," Mumgaard said.

Instead of lasers, Commonwealth uses a cloud of super-heated plasma that burns at around 180 million degrees Fahrenheit, held in place by massive magnets that the company manufactures on site. "The magnets in this machine will be the strongest magnets in the world," Mumgaard said. "[They] could lift up an aircraft carrier."

Commonwealth expects to complete its demonstration reactor next year. It just announced plans to build its first full-scale power plant in Virginia, but that won't deliver energy to the grid until sometime next decade. The demonstration reactor, Mumgaard said, "is the penultimate step to that."

Critics point out that fusion power has been an ever-elusive holy grail, always 20 to 30 years away. But startups like Commonwealth say this time is different. The technology is advancing as fast as the need for clean energy is rising – stars aligning in the quest to create stars here on Earth.

"This is not a paper exercise for us," Mumgaard said. "We're putting this machine together, we're buying the parts, we're machining the parts, and it's all coming together at the exact time the world really needs something like this. I think that's a really cool story."

Sounds interesting. I'll be following how it works out.

When I was a lad (yes...last century) we were told that nuclear power would be so cheap that it wouldn't be worth metering it. Now, it's costing a fortune to decommission the first nuclear power plants.

FYI Apparently the admin are forcing the issue with some.

@DeWayfarer we should have been using nuclear power years ago. That’s my point. Countries like France and Spain get a lot of power derived that way

@Briggett the one thing that Fukushima, Chernobyl and Three Mile Island has proven is that it's not safe.

Plus where are you going to put the darn waste?

They still haven't moved the waste in San Onofre!

Why? Because it's too expensive to even move!

The only safe place for it is out in space!

Nuclear fusion has no waste. Plus has no radiation. NONE

You can't reuse a fission reactor. You must keep on building new ones, because of the radiation!

San Onofre is a example of this. It's deactivated! Too much radiation!

You can't keep on building new reactors. You'll run out of places to put it.

@DeWayfarer don’t know what to tell you but everything comes with a risk for once I’m favor do something new with long term investment and better energy efficiency.
Besides I we better technology than we used to have and so very smart people capable of doing some things, so let’s use what we know how to do and beating a dead horse and kicking the further down the road

We have known how to use fusion technology since 2022 when figuring out a working model.

That's when it should have started.

We had to satisfy doubters since then by repeatedly testing it multiple times.

@Briggett big oil is only a small part of the problem. Even the Saudis are going solar. They have solar arrays bigger than cities out in their deserts.

Trump is an anchronist who doesn't know his armor isn't bulletproof.

@Briggett the bigger picture is fusion technology is here. And the above corporation in the post has already started the process.

Big oil is out of the question because they are not stopping it!

The commitments have already been made. They are approved by the state of Virginia. Not just other corporate funding.

The governor of Virginia made a speech about the approval.

It's not going to stop.
