Do people virtue signal due to low self esteem?

No, they are narcissists trying to convince people they are good. I HATE it.

I guess I’ve always thought of companies, like Nike, as the biggest offenders.

Is it a big thing at the individual level?

It could partially be that. Or maybe ego and self righteousness.
