1580 After a three day siege, (the Siege of Smerwick) the English Army beheaded over 600 Irish and Papal soldiers and civilians at Dún an Óir in Ireland. Although the defenders eventually surrendered, most of them were then massacred on the orders of the English commander, the Lord Deputy of Ireland, Arthur Grey.
1874 Fiji becomes a British colony.
1886 First dinner jacket (tuxedo) is worn to an autumn ball at Tuxedo Park in New York.
1888 Teetotalers' excursion train crashes, killing 64 at Mud Run, Pennsylvania.
On 10th October 1918, RMS Leinster was serving as the Dún Laoghaire to Holyhead mail boat when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat.just outside Dublin Bay. Over 500 people perished in the sinking, the greatest single loss of life in the Irish Sea. In 2003, The Friends of the Leinster held a service at Holyhead to commemorate the 85th anniversary.

1996 A Scottish fisherman found a message in a bottle. It had been thrown in the North Sea in 1914 to chart the currents.

King Crimson released their debut studio album In the Court of the Crimson King on Island Records in England and Atlantic Records in America. Rolling Stone named In the Court of the Crimson King the second greatest progressive rock album of all time, behind Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon.

During a UK tour The Beatles appeared at De Montfort Hall in Leicester. Ringo Starr drove himself to the venue after taking delivery of a brand new Facel Vega, apparently reaching speeds of 140 MPH on the M6 motorway.
