1569 The Duke of Norfolk is arrested by Queen Elizabeth I for conspiring to marry Mary, Queen of Scots.
1661 Yachting begins in England as King Charles II defeats his brother James, Duke of York, in a yacht race from Greenwich to Gravesend.
On 1st October 1806, the brig Mary ran aground on the Arklow Bank, in the Irish Sea. it was wrecked with the loss of seven of the ten people on board. Two of the survivors were rescued by a ship from Liverpool, whilst the third was rescued by a ship from Amlwch, Anglesey.
1814 The Congress of Vienna opens to redraw Europe's political map after the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte.
1863 Five Russian warships are welcomed in New York City.
1898 Jews are expelled from Kyiv, Ukraine.
The Tariff Act of 1890, commonly called the McKinley Tariff, was an act of the United States Congress, framed by Representative William McKinley, that became law on October 1st, 1890.
The tariff, which raised the tax levied on imports from 30% to 70% had a devastating impact on the Welsh tinplate industry and also resulted in the emigration of many involved in the industry to America, mainly to Philadelphia and Ohio.
1936 Generalissimo Francisco Franco becomes head of state in Nationalist-controlled Spain, consolidating power under his rule during the Spanish Civil War.
The 38th Ryder Cup was held on 1st–4th October 2010 at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport. It was the first time the Ryder Cup had been staged in Wales and was played on the specifically designed Twenty Ten course.
On 1st October 2011, a charge of 5p was introduced on all single use carrier bags, in an attempt to drastically reduce the number of bags given away in Wales.

The first edition of UK BBC Radio 1's Top Gear was aired. Presented by John Peel and Pete Drummond, they featured The Move, Traffic, Pink Floyd, Tim Rose and Tomorrow featuring Keith West. The name, Top Gear, had been chosen after a national competition. The winning entry had been submitted by a young woman called Susan Warne, who attended the first recording and was interviewed on the programme. Top Gear began life in 1964 on the BBC Light Programme and was revived with a progressive rock focus in 1967.
