The Welsh National Eisteddfod of 1917 was held on 6th September at Birkenhead(Furry has no idea why ) and is remembered as 'The Eisteddfod of the Black Chair'.
When the winner of the Chair poetry competition was announced as Hedd Wyn Trawsfynydd, there was silence and no one moved forward to collect the prize. This was because Ellis Evans, writing under his bardic name of Hedd Wyn, had been killed a few weeks earlier at the Third Battle of Ypres on 31 July 1917. The Chair was draped in black cloth for the remainder of the ceremony and was later taken to Evans' home farm of Yr Ysgwrn near Trawsfynydd.
Ysgol Gyfyn Rhydfelen (Now Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg), the first Welsh medium secondary school in South Wales, was opened in the village of Rhydyfelin near Pontypridd, on 6th September 1962. In 2006, the school moved to a new site in Church Village and today, has approximately 1000 students, ninety-two percent of whom come from homes where the first language is English.
6 Sep 1970 Jimi Hendrix made his final live appearance when he appeared at the Isle Of Fehmarn in Germany. Less than two weeks later, the 27-year-old guitar virtuoso would be dead. Among the songs in the band’s set were 'Hey Joe,' 'Purple Haze,' and 'Foxy Lady.' While bootlegs of the now-famous performance were distributed over the years, it wasn’t until 2005 that the audio – taken from a recording by the festival’s promoter – was officially released as Live at the Isle of Fehmarn.
6 Sep 1968 The Beatles continued working on the George Harrison song 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' at Abbey Road Studios. Eric Clapton added the guitar solo (and became the first famous outside musician to play on a Beatles recording). During a car ride from Surrey into London, Harrison asked Clapton to play guitar on the track. Clapton, was reluctant to participate; he later recalled that his initial response was: "I can't do that. Nobody ever plays on Beatles records". The recording was one of several collaborations between Harrison and Clapton during the late 1960s and was followed by the pair co-writing the song 'Badge' for Clapton's group Cream.
I attended Ysgol Gyfun Rhydyfelin, a good few years before its move to Garth Olwg. My older brother went to Ysgol Gyfun Llanharan, the boundaries changed before I began comp. My younger brother was in the first class to attend Ysgol Gyfun Y Cymmer, a new Welsh School on the Rhondda Valley. So all three of us went to different comprehensive schools.
