1422 Henry VI becomes King of England at 8 months old after the death of his father Henry V; the youngest person to inherit the throne of England.
1854 A major outbreak of cholera occurs in Soho, London; physician John Snow calls it "the most terrible outbreak of cholera which ever occurred in this kingdom"

Korea's first Protestant martyr, Robert Jermain Thomas was beaten to death on this day 1866.
Born in Rhayader in 1839, Thomas moved to Llanover when his father became its chapel minister. After leaving college he joined the Protestant evangelical missionary society, the 'London Mission Society' (now part of the 'Council for World Mission'), who sent him on a foreign mission to China.
In 1866, Thomas joined an American trading ship headed for Korea. This was a dangerous voyage as at the time, Korea was closed to foreigners and had recently executed approximately 8,000 Christians. Undeterred, Thomas threw bibles onto the riverbank as the ship sailed up the Taedong River.
The Korean's declared the ship as a non-friendly and when it ran aground near Pyongyang, a battle commenced which lasted for two days. Eventually, the Koreans set fire to the ship, which resulted in 18 of the crew being either shot or burnt to death. Thomas and another crew member jumped to shore, where they were beaten to death by angry civilians.

On this day 1968, Gary Sobers made cricketing history by hitting six sixes off one over from Malcolm Nash, in a match between Nottinghamshire and Glamorgan in Swansea. Sobers hit the final six out of the ground "all the way to Swansea" as Wilf Wooller put it in his television commentary.
Sadly cricket is no longer played at St.Helens.
1968 Private Eye magazine reports that John Lennon and Yoko Ono's upcoming album "Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins" will feature a cover picture of them nude.
1974 Pirate Radio Veronica broadcasts its final radio show from MV Norderney before shutting down its transmissions to comply with new Dutch anti-pirate legislation.
As did Radio North Sea International.
