Ukrainian Independence Day
1831 Naturalist John Henslow writes to Charles Darwin to offer him a place aboard the Admiralty surveying vessel HMS Beagle on a voyage to chart the South American coast.
178 people lost their lives on 24th August 1848, when the emigration ship, Ocean Monarch caught fire and sank off Colwyn Bay.
Ocean Monarch was on a voyage from Liverpool to Boston, USA, when between Abergele Bay and Great Orme's Head off Llandudno, she was seen to raise the flag of distress when flames rose towards the rear of the vessel. In the resulting panic, many passengers threw themselves overboard and Fredrick Jerome, a sailor from one of the rescue ships, was later to be awarded the freedom of his home city, NewYork, for his heroic efforts in saving fifteen people. The cause of the fire was believed to be passengers smoking, despite it being prohibited by the captain.
1875 Matthew Webb (Captain Webb) started his attempt from Dover England to become the first person to swim the English Channel. He reached Calais, France at 10.40 am the following morning, having been in the water for 22 hours. A memorial to him
is erected in Dawley - Telford, close to his birthplace, now demolished.
1967 Two penguins from Chessington Zoo were taken on a day trip to a local ice-rink to cool off during sweltering London temperatures.
1975 The first ever nude performance in a British opera took place at Glyndebourne.

17-year old singer and guitarist Bruce Springsteen joined a group called Earth. The group were a heavy blues-rock power trio/quartet playing covers of Jimi Hendrix, Traffic and Cream, as well as some Chicago blues classics. Initially, they consisted of Springsteen (guitars & vocals), John Graham (bass) and Michael Burke (drums).

The Doors started recording their first album at Sunset Sound Recording Studios, West Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. They had developed much of the material for their debut during live performances in 1966, particularly at the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles. Released in January 1967, the album contains the full-length version of the group's breakthrough single 'Light My Fire' and concludes with 'The End', noted for its improvised Oedipal spoken-word section. The album is now widely considered one of the greatest albums in rock history, and has been consistently ranked among the greatest albums of all time by various publications.
