On 23rd August 55 BC, Julius Caesar accompanied by two Roman force legions, set sail from the northern coast of modern day France on a planned invasion of Britain. They landed near Dover on or around 26th August and although this invasion proved unsuccessful, it paved the way for further expeditions, which resulted in a more successful invasion under the rule of Emperor Claudius in AD 43.

From 23rd to 30th August 1284, King Edward I of England held court in the Welsh llys (royal court) at Abergwyngregyn. This was following the deaths of Llywelyn and Dafydd ap Gruffyd, and the subsequent subjugation of Wales.

On 23rd August 1911, rioting in Bargoed resulted in Mr. Barnett, a Jewish jeweller, whose shop had been plundered, appearing at the door with a revolver and threatening to shoot anyone continuing the depredations. The attackers thereupon withdrew.
