June 15th

1215 King John of England signs the Magna Carta at Runnymede near Windsor in Surrey, limiting royal authority and establishing the principle that the king and his government are not above the law.

Power in Wales at the time was divided between the marcher lords on the border between Wales and England, royal territories in Pembrokeshire and the independent Welsh lords of North Wales. John invaded Gwynedd in 1211 and forced Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great) to surrender his lands west of the River Conwy and hand over his son Gruffudd as a hostage as a pledge for Llywelyn's continued good faith. Llywelyn subsequently allied himself with the rebel barons.

Three of Magna Carta's clauses relate directly to Wales;
Clauses 56 and 57 refer to lands and possessions taken from Welshmen by John, his father Henry or his brother Richard. They were to be returned at once and any disputes arising were to be dealt with according to the law of Wales.

Clause 58 demanded the immediate release of Gruffudd and all other Welsh hostages

1381 Wat Tyler - leader of the Peasants' Revolt, was killed at Smithfield in London. Richard II had agreed to meet the leaders of the revolt, and listen to their demands. What was said between Tyler and the king is largely conjecture but by all accounts the unarmed Tyler was suddenly attacked without warning and killed by the Lord Mayor of London, Sir William Walworth, and John Cavendish, a member of the king's group. This unprovoked betrayal of the truce flag and Tyler's killing threw the people into a panic. Not being organized as a military force, they broke ranks and began to flee for their lives.
