1667The Raid on the Medway, sometimes called the Battle of Chatham began. It lasted for five days and resulted in a decisive victory for the Dutch over the English in the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The Dutch bombarded and then captured the town of Sheerness and sailed up the River Medway to Chatham, where they burned ten naval vessels and towed away the HMS Unity and the HMS Royal Charles, the pride of the English fleet. It was the worst defeat in the Royal Navy's history.

68AD: The Roman Emperor Nero dies with the words "Qualis artifex pereo" (What an artist dies in me) at the hands of his private secretary, Epaphroditos who is forced into the deed by Nero himself who can't bring himself to commit suicide.



1898 Second Convention of Peking leases the "New Territories" of Hong Kong to United Kingdom for 99 years rent-free, expiring on 30 June 1997



1898: The United States annexes the territory of Hawaii , a crucial step in the U.S.’ expansion into the Pacific.





1934: Donald Duck makes his debut in the Walt Disney Silly Symphonies cartoon The Wise Little Hen.


Music 1964: Bob Dylan starts a long and gruelling recording session at Columbia Recording Studios in New York City which would see him record 14 original songs, including 'Mr. Tambourine Man'.



1998: The Ronettes sue their producer Phil Spector citing that he had breached the group's 34-year-old contract by paying the members no royalties since 1963.
