While the exact date is not universally agreed upon, May 6 is often cited as the day the Tower of London was completed in 1078 under the orders of William the Conqueror. The Tower, originally built as a royal residence and fortress, has served as a symbol of power and control throughout English history.



1536 Henry VIII ordered that English language Bibles be placed in every church.



1659 Restoration: A faction of the British Army removed Richard Cromwell as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth.



1801 Captain Thomas Cochrane (born at Annsfield, near Hamilton, Lanarkshire) captured the 32-gun Spanish frigate El Gamo in his 14 gun ship HMS Speedy.



On 6th May 1829 the London-based Welsh society, the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion held an eisteddfod in London.



1840 The first postage stamps, the ‘Penny Black’ and two-penny ‘blues’, which were the brainchild of Roland Hill, became valid for postage On This Day.



1882: Phoenix Park Murders – In Dublin, Ireland, British officials Lord Frederick Cavendish and Thomas Henry Burke were assassinated by members of the Irish National Invincibles. This event heightened tensions between Ireland and Britain.




The last execution to take place in Wales occurred on 6th May 1958 when Vivian Teed was hanged for murder at Swansea Prison.




1967 The Who's Keith Moon offers this insightful advice to young drummers during an interview in Melody Maker magazine: "To get your playing more forceful, hit the drums harder."



1972 – With their second studio album ‘Prophets, Seers & Sages: The Angels of the Ages’, Tyrannosaurus Rex hit No.1 in the UK on this day May 6 in music history.




2004: Final Episode of "Friends" Airs – The beloved TV show "Friends" aired its final episode on May 6th, 2004. The series finale was watched by over 52 million viewers in the United States, making it one of the most-watched TV episodes of all time.
And it’s still on British TV every day!
