1370 Construction began on the Bastille, the medieval fortress turned state prison that, centuries later, came to symbolize French despotism. It was attacked in 1789 during the early days of the French Revolution and later torn down.
1500 Pedro Álvares Cabral is the first European to discover Brazil, landing near Monte Pascoal and claiming it for Portugal.
In 1823, roller skates were patented in Britain by Robert John Tyers, a fruiterer in Picadilly, London. His Volitos were an “apparatus to be attached to boots ... for the purpose of travelling or pleasure.” They used five small wheels in a single line.
On 22nd April 1912, Denys Corbett Wilson made the first manned flight fully across the Irish Sea, from Goodwick to Crane near Enniscorthy, County Wexford in a time of 1 hour 40 minutes.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston completed the world’s first non-stop, single-handed global circumnavigation.
