On 4th April 1120 the Archbishop of Canterbury granted a request from Gruffydd ap Cynan, King of Gwynedd, to recognise David the Scot as Bishop of Bangor.


1581Queen Elizabeth I knighted Francis Drake aboard his ship the Golden Hind at Deptford after his circumnavigation of the world.



1660The 'Declaration of Breda' was proclaimed by King Charles II in which he promised a general pardon for crimes committed during the English Civil War.




1811 The opening of the Standedge Tunnel . It is located on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and is the longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel ever built in Britain, being over 3 miles long, 638 feet (194m) underground and 645 feet (196m) above sea level.





On 4th April 1903 the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway began operation.
It was one of very few local lines to be built under the Light Railways act of 1896, which encouraged growth in areas of low industry. It soon became freight only, apart from a week in August 1945 when it was used to ferry visitors to the National Eisteddfod held in the area. The line eventually closed, but in 1963 was partially reopened after a group of volunteers and enthusiasts raised money for its restoration.






1964British pop group The Beatles occupied the first five places in the US singles pop charts with:- 'Can't Buy Me Love', 'Twist and Shout', 'She Loves You', 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' and 'Please Please Me'. It was the first and only time anyone ever monopolized the entire top five.




1967: Ex-Caroline DJ Simon Dee starts his BBC TV Show Dee Time. The guests are Jimi Hendrix, Cat Stevens and Kiki Dee.



1988The British TV soap opera 'Crossroads' came to an end after 24 years with the transmission of the last of its 4,510 episodes.
