April 3, 1804, marks an important milestone in the history of the Industrial Revolution, as it was the day Richard Trevithick’s steam-powered locomotive was tested for the first time. The locomotive, known as the “Penydarren locomotive,” was designed to pull carts along a railway track using steam power. Although the engine was not commercially successful, it represented a breakthrough in transportation technology.





Outlaw Jesse James was shot dead on this day in 1882. Both he and his brother Frank considered themselves to be of Welsh descent.
Jesse James was born in Clay County, Missouri on 5 September 1847. His great-grandfather is believed to have been William James, a Baptist minister from Little Newcastle in Pembrokeshire.





1913English suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst was sentenced to 3 years in prison for inciting supporters to place explosives at the London home of British politician David Lloyd George. The Home Secretary banned all future public meetings of suffragettes.


1929RMS Queen Mary was ordered from John Brown & Company Shipbuilding and Engineering by Cunard Line. She was the flagship of the Cunard Line from May 1936 until October 1946 when she was replaced by Queen Elizabeth.
She also held the 'Blue Riband' fastest Atlantic crossing award from 1936 to 1937 and then from 1938 to 1952 when she was beaten by the new SS United States.




1954Oxford won the 100th Boat Race in rough conditions on the River Thames.




The LP "Bookends" by Simon And Garfunkel was released on Columbia Records. Five singles were issued from the album, "A Hazy Shade of Winter" (#13 in 1966), "At the Zoo" (#16 in 1967), "Fakin' It" (#23 in 1967) "Mrs. Robinson" (#1 in 1968) and "America" (#97 in 1972) The album went to #1 in the UK and the US, and has been certified 2X Platinum.




1979: Kate Bush starts her 28-date Tour Of Life, making her concert debut at Liverpool's Empire Theatre. It would be (to date) her first and last tour, although she would take to the stage again 35 years later for a 22-night Before the Dawn residency at London's Hammersmith Apollo between 26 August – 1 October 2014
