March 28, 1856, marked the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the Crimean War (1853-1856). Britain, along with France, the Ottoman Empire, and Sardinia, had fought against Russia over the control of territories in the Black Sea region. The treaty redrew boundaries and made important political concessions, including neutralizing the Black Sea to prevent Russian expansion.

1871 – The Paris Commune is formally established in Paris
Following France’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War and the capture of Emperor Napoleon III, Paris was in a state of unrest. The Paris Commune was a radical socialist and revolutionary government that briefly ruled Paris from March 18 to May 28, 1871.
It arose from the city’s working-class population’s desire to resist the conservative government of Adolphe Thiers and to implement progressive policies, including the separation of church and state, the abolition of child labor, and the establishment of a citizens’ militia.

On this day in 1919, a law regulating “la fabrication du pain” was passed in France, restricting bakers from working from 10 pm to 4 am. This culminated in a quiet cultural shift in which the traditional French boule—which took hours to prepare—was gradually replaced by the baguette , a long, narrow, bread that could be prepared in a fraction of the time. The French staple eventually became commonplace, and today the baguette is protected as a part of the UNESCOCultural Heritage list.

On this day in 1936, Inge Lehmann upended prevailing theories about the nature of Earth's core. Seven years prior, an earthquake had struck New Zealand. Lehmann studied the waves produced by the quake, which consisted of P and S waves—the former of which pass through all states of matter, the latter of which pass only through solids. Lehmann observed that some P waves had been deflected, as though they had been bent by something solid. Thus she came to the conclusion that the Earth had a solid core—a conclusion that was eventually validated by technology and helped to bolster the study of plate tectonics.

The night of 28th March 1944 was the final air raid on Cardiff during World War II by the Luftwaffe.

On March 28, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a march in Memphis, Tennessee, in support of striking sanitation workers. The march turned violent when some protesters engaged in looting and vandalism, leading to police intervention. This was one of the few instances where a demonstration led by King saw violence, which deeply troubled him.

Pepys
Saturday 28 March 1668
Up, and to the office, where all the morning busy, and at noon home to dinner with my clerks; and though my head full of business, yet I had a desire to end this holyday week with a play; and so, with my wife and Deb., to the King’s house, and there saw “The Indian Emperour,” a very good play indeed, and thence directly home, and to my writing of my letters, and so home to supper and to bed for fearing my eyes.

Our greatest business at the office to-day is our want of money for the setting forth of these ships that are to go out, and my people at dinner tell me that they do verily doubt that the want of men will be so great, as we must press; and if we press, there will be mutinies in the town; for the seamen are said already to have threatened the pulling down of the Treasury Office; and if they do once come to that, it will not be long before they come to ours.

The great thing about Pepys is whenever he is having a dalliance with a serving wench he switches to French!😄
