Always in the background, never received the credit until years later..... He was actually an open heart surgeon who never operated on a human..... Assisting surgeon Alfred Blalock they accomplished groundbreaking researching the cause of hemorrhagic and traumatic shock - crush syndrome - vascular and cardiac surgery.
Blalock was requested at John Hopkins and he requested Thomas also come, at their time there were many racial barriers.
Thomas always the assistant, they accomplished the solution to pediatric open heart surgery of a heart condition known as baby blue ......Thomas first performed the surgery himself first on dogs proven it can be done and assisted Blalock on humans.
HE TRAINED SURGEONS AT JOHN HOPKINS, but was never allowed to become a surgeon himself.
In 1976 he was presented with the degree of Honorary Doctor of Laws by John Hopkins University and in 2003 having his name also put on Blalock Taussig Thomas shunt surgical procedure.
