Black History

Jim Crow Laws

Established for Black people and in force even 66 years ago.

Signs such as no dogs negroes Mexicans / negroes to the back / negro water fountain / negro restroom / negro hospital / no Black living in white areas unless servants / all Blacks to the back of bus if allowed to get on / no Blacks in white schools, receiving little funding and outdated books / Blacks never shake a white person's hand / Blacks no public affection / Blacks never introduced to whites but whites introduced to Blacks / no respectful title such as Mr. or Miss. or Mrs. for Blacks, often referred to as boy, gal, you there, derogatory name, just first name / Blacks driving had to give right away to Whites / Blacks don't touch a White woman or even lite her cigarette / Black males don't look at a White woman / Black males never compliment a White woman / Blacks walk behind Whites / Blacks never be smarter than Whites or correct them / Blacks never call a White person a liar / Blacks never laugh at a White person / Blacks no voting rights / Blacks don't fight a White person, even if they're beating you.

This was the life of Blacks especially before the 1960s and worse; fear of hanging, fear of being murdered, fear of property being burnt to the ground, females fear of being raped by Whites, and you couldn't complain. They took what they wanted even a pair of shoes and you couldn't complain.

The customs died hard, too. I saw "whites only" signs as a child, when we drove through the South visiting family in the early 60s.
