The Llanerch Disaster
On 6th February 1890 an explosion at Llanerch Colliery, Pontypool killed 176 miners. When the explosion occurred the blast was heard two miles away and willing hands came from neighbouring and distant mines but there were only ten survivors. The inquest into the disaster reported that the cause of the explosion was the gas firedamp ignited by the naked lights of the men who were working there and it strongly recommended the future use of safety lamps. It was also found that on the morning of the explosion, the mine had not been thoroughly checked for gas.
