December 28th1065: The Original Westminster Abbey Is ConsecratedWestminster Abbey, England’s most famous church, is consecrated in London. Construction had begun in 1042 after Edward the Confessor, one of the last Anglo-Saxon kings, ordered its construction. He died just a week after its consecration and was buried there. In 1066, the coronation of William the Conqueror took place in the Abbey. Finally, in the 13th century, the original structure was redesigned into the Gothic masterpiece known the world over today.
1879DEC, 28Tay Bridge disaster: The central part of the Tay Rail Bridge in Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom collapses as a train passes over it, killing 75. The Tay Bridge disaster occurred during a violent storm on Sunday 28 December 1879, when the first Tay Rail Bridge collapsed as a North British Railway (NBR) passenger train on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen Line from Burntisland bound for its final destination of Dundee passed over it, killing all aboard. The bridge—designed by Sir Thomas Bouch—used lattice girders supported by iron piers, with cast iron columns and wrought iron cross-bracing. The piers were narrower and their cross-bracing was less extensive and robust than on previous similar designs by Bouch.
1934 The first Test Match for women’s cricket was between Australia and England and was held at Brisbane. England beat Australia 2–0 in a three-Test series, with the final match drawn.
1979The Kate Bush Christmas Special, also known as Kate, airs on the BBC. The singer performs songs from her first three albums and introduces the holiday tune December will be Magic Again" ,Peter Gabriel guest stars, singing " Here Comes The Flood " and, with Bush, a duet of Roy Harpers "Another Day."
