1906 The opening of the Newport Transporter Bridge in south east Wales. Only eight such bridges remain in use worldwide and this is the oldest and largest of the three historic transporter bridges which remain in Britain. Vehicles are tranported on the 'gondola' across the River Usk.
Currently being renovated.

I remember going on the Newport Transporter Bridge when I was very young, and when it was used as a crossing in every day use before all the modern bridges were built. One of the reasons it failed was the Lysaght side of the river wasn't developed as much as the builders thought it would be. Obviously today things are very different and there are large industrial estate, but the the transporter bridge itself will only now ever be a delightful novelty with the modern road infrastructure now doing the job.
