Here's a recording of opera singer Alessandro Moreschi from 1904 singing Ave Maria
He was born in 1858 and is considered to be the last castrato ever.

I’ve heard that before. It’s crazy. Hard to believe that was a thing, but it was. The castrati were superstars in their day. But what a sacrifice.

@Harmonium1923 most of them weren't, actually. Only a select few actually made it big. Truly sad to think of how much they suffered for no reason after such a big sacrifice in the hopes of a better life.
