Interesting facts about the founding fathers of America

Ages of the Founding Fathers on July 4, 1776: James Monroe, 18; Aaron Burr, 20; Alexander Hamilton, 21; James Madison, 25; Thomas Jefferson, 33; John Adams, 40; Paul Revere, 41; George Washington, 44. The oldest was Benjamin Franklin who was 70.

Of the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention, 17 owned slaves. Many of the framers harbored moral qualms about slavery. Some, including Benjamin Franklin (a former slaveholder) and Alexander Hamilton (who was born in a slave colony in the British West Indies) became members of anti-slavery societies.

In addition to men, women also played important roles, such as Abigail Adams and Mercy Otis Warren.

When Benjamin Franklin was asked after signing the Constitution if they had created a monarchy or a republic, Franklin replied: “A republic, if you can keep it.”
