The patron saint of El Salvador came out of a gruesome civil war..

Right wing military dictatorships were plaguing the country of El Salvador for decades leading into the 80s. These military strongmen were supported and funded by western powers like the United States. A growing insurgency led by the populace was beginning to take control and funded by the USSR. The Catholic church in El Salvador had to chose a side, they chose to side with the peasants. Father Oscar Romero was seeing the devastation first hand and emerged as a voice against the violence. He eventually became the archbishop of El Salvador and a leading figure against the right. The American CIA and military personnel in the country took notice. Archbishop Romero was gunned down in the middle of mass in front of his people. The civil war lasted another decade followed by years of instability. Oscar Romero is now Saint Romero, the patron Saint of El Salvador. In 2016 the government vowed to arrest and punish those responsible for these acts in El Salvador..
