I wish I didn’t know what I know sometimes…

There was a YouTube discussion between a journalist and Hungarian politician who was saying that it’s better for his country to remain homogeneous, with all of its citizens the same race, same ethnicity, same religion. And when the journalist suggested that was a racist policy, the politician basically said, "I’m just saying that is how we like things here (shades of small-town Texas !). You don’t have to agree."

I was actually glad that I don’t have a Youtube account, because while I have no desire to move to or even visit Hungary, I probably would’ve waded in to say something to those fools from the U.S., UK and Australia agreeing with the politician and praising what he had to say ! Talk about having no clue about one’s own history !

The U.S., Canada and Australia exist because Europeans basically blew up some homogeneous societies simply by settling there, some tribes no longer existed shortly after their arrival ! The indigenous people had no choice in terms of keeping a homogeneous society on their own land.

Same thing with the UK and their "Empire-Building". My mind is always blown when someone from the UK complains about "immigrants" from countries they once actively colonized ! And not just to live alongside the indigenous people, but to take the country over, rename it, run it and drain it of its natural resources.

So do these folks not realize this happened ? Do they still think their ancestors were somehow justified and it’s "different" because they were doing it ? I honestly wonder. 🥺

There are right wingers with this mentality pretty much everywhere. I visited Hungary and studied for a semester there and was shocked by how racist University professors were. I mean in my own country there are many racists too, but not our professors, at least not openly racist in my own field since it's in healthcare and people tend to be more empathetic. Plus it was their choice to teach in an international department and not a Hungarian one so they should have been open to other cultures by default. But yeah there are always other nationalists agreeing with this, despite their own countries being multicultural from the beginning, plus I even know people who are immigrants to other countries but they don't want immigrants going to their country of origin, which is absurd. They think of themselves as superior immigrants apparently. It's hard to reason with these people.
Like so many egocentric opinions, manifest destiny is the thief's hand that keeps on taking.

In the US, I've heard more than once that it was right to take over the tribal lands because "the Indians weren't doing anything with them."

The refusal to view other cultures as just that was a distinguishing characteristic of invaders to new territories. Still is.

We were taught in school to admire intrepid explorers and it was never mentioned they were inland pirates - and often just as brutal, because they chose not to admit the people they murdered, raped, stole from and drove out of their homelands were equal in value to them, the trespassers.

Of course it's racist.

Pretty much everyone immigrated from somewhere at some time in history except for some little tribe of proto-humans in Africa a few million years ago. Empires existed all over the world, created by all races, not just Europeans. It's just the way the world works. The challenge to humanity today is to learn to move past that tribalism.
@ChipmunkErnie So the folks complaining about immigrants and wishing for a homogeneous country should understand that this ship has probably sailed.

@bijouxbroussard Ideally, yes -- but for whatever reason humanity seems hardwired into the "us/them" view where "stranger" equals "threat". Leftover from pre-history, whatever. :(

I don't have to agree, but this goes down into land in Ontario. There have been discussions for years, that have resulted in blockades, protests, where first nations own the land now occupied by 'colonizers'. Where I grew up, is entirely indigenous land upon treaty for fighting the US as allies with the UK. I watched them become second class citizens, but where does it start and stop? There are poor attitudes out there, and I'm sure the city council recognizing, we are living on borrowed land, which professes alignment with those old treaties (but will never give up the land for the wealth generated, giving that up is worse), where is the line?

At some point it becomes tribalism again, feudalism, no matter how you chase the words. I'm not one who thinks, cause one culture displaced another, another should displace another, perpetuating.. There comes a time for conversation.

"Same ethnicity"
In Hungary, yeah? It's Central Europe, it's a rich blend of many kinds of ethnicities.

I guess the follow up question should have been;

“homogeneous” since when?

In a mixed population it's harder to find the mate you want, the food you prefer, the music you like, etc.. There is some benefit to everyone being basically alike, but I'd never deny anyone the right to live where they want because of their race or culture.

I don't understand it either as to why these people have those opinions. It doesn't make any rational sense. It drives me nuts too :/
Gangstress · 41-45, F
Is there a chance you could send me a link to that if you dont mind?
@Gangstress Yes, I’ll try and find it again. He was polite, and put it in terms of "preserving" their "heritage".

My cynical side again....If we were all the same color, nationality, religion, political persuasion, gender,....we'd still find a reason to hate, enslave, and imprison....
@originnone We would, no question. That’s why there are intertribal conflicts, too.

To them, that was yesterday. It all starts fresh now. FORGET ABOUT THE PAST is all you have to do. It's all very convenient. Next thing will be body type, eye and hair color. Not to mention sexual orientation. But then they'll want to kerp the money and land in their families so interbreeding will be the norm. Sixty years and theyll all be a bunch of gibbering idiots.

The irony that hungry is not even a homogeneous country nor people. They are mixed like alot of southern Europeans. So that politican is not the brightest. Tbh most of Europe is pretty backwards when comes to people being different than them. They always want to claim they are more ahead in that department than the USA or even Canada but majority of Europe (at least in the EU) still has a mindset of the 1600's. Alot of eu countries jail illegal immigrants in prisons with all the other hardcore criminals. I always found it funny how they love pointing the finger at the USA but do the same thing, if not worse.
