More and more lately I hear what people are saying and read what they're writing and I can see The Dark Ages moving closer in the rear view mirror

It’s really something, isn’t it? The whole of my life up til now has been built on a foundation of complacent naivete. The idea that we as humans had evolved. That, while imperfect yet, we were locked into a forward momentum, that our sense of humanity had become immovable. I’m still off-balance from having that rug pulled out from under me. It’s not that I know the sky is falling. I think there is always hope. But I relate more now to those who lived through tragic times. How they felt before the sky fell. The hatred and dehumanizing over things so much less important than peace and harmony. I suppose these waves are the human version of the disease that effectively culls the herd. We have to inflict tragedy on ourselves to remember to be grateful for all we have. Maybe someday we’ll walk up to this edge and finally say “nah, not worth it.”

Evolution doesn't work like that. It's just survival of the fittest. And fittest just means the genotype that produces the phenotype that has the most offspring that survive to breed. Evolution doesn't require that the organisms enjoy the process.
