eorge W. Crawford was the son of Peter Crawford, a Revolutionary War veteran who settled in Georgia and became a 10-term representative in the state’s legislature. He graduated from what would become Princeton University School of Law and later obtained a master’s degree from the University of Georgia. He served as a 2nd lieutenant in the 10th Regiment of the Georgia Militia from 1824 to 1825 and appointed as Georgia’s attorney general in 1827. The following year, Crawford challenged Thomas E. Burnside, Ambrose Burnside’s uncle, to a [duel] and killed him. In 1837, Crawford was elected to the Georgia General Assembly and later elevated to the US House of Representatives. He became Georgia Governor in 1847 and served as US Secretary of War under Zachary Taylor in 1849.
In 1861, George W. Crawford was elected as president of Georgia’s Secession Convention where he oversaw the vote which passed 208–89. He is considered the author of Georgia’s Ordinance of Secession [which argued]:
“A brief history of the rise, progress, and policy of anti-slavery and the political organization into whose hands the administration of the Federal Government has been committed will fully justify the pronounced verdict of the people of Georgia… The party of Lincoln… is admitted to be an anti-slavery party… While the subordination and the political and social inequality of the African race was fully conceded by all, it was plainly apparent that slavery would soon disappear from what are now the non-slave-holding States of the original thirteen... The prohibition of slavery in the Territories, hostility to it everywhere, the equality of the black and white races, disregard of all constitutional guarantees it its favor, were boldly proclaimed by its leaders and applauded by its followers… the majority of the people of the North demand that we shall receive them as our rulers… The prohibition of slavery in the Territories is the cardinal principle of this organization… For forty years this question has been considered and debated in the halls of Congress, before the people, by the press, and before the tribunals of justice. The majority of the people of the North in 1860 decided it in their own favor. We refuse to submit to that judgment, and in vindication of our refusal we offer the Constitution of our country and point to the total absence of any express power to exclude us.” [read the full document]
On January 13, 1944, the [SS George Walker Crawford], a liberty ship (a class of cargo ship built during World War II), honoring Crawford for his service to the state of Georgia, was delivered into federal service, proving old Confederate White supremacists never die, they get memorialized on American ships.
