Serious question, how did scholars during the Renaissance period support themselves?

It seems like most of them didn't get paid for their work so I wonder how they spent all that time travelling & studying without starving to death.

They seemed to get by. I think they earned money from writing books and teaching. Some might have worked as translators or minor officials in council, court or church organisations.

Travelling was a very slow and unpleasant chore in their day so theirs was probably in search of work.
