Taken for a Ride - The U.S. History of the Assault on Public Transport in the Last Century

[media=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-I8GDklsN4]

Taken for a Ride is a documentary film by Martha Olson and Jim Klein about the Great American Streetcar Scandal. The 55-minute film was first broadcast on August 6, 1996 on PBS .

Taken for a Ride begins with interviews on the inefficiencies and congestion on Los Angeles' highways. Next, the film displays a variety of archival footage on streetcar systems around the United States, asserting that streetcars were a widespread and efficient means of transportation. The film continues into a description of the General Motors streetcar conspiracy, starting with a history of National City Lines and Pacific City Lines and General Motors' investment in both companies.

An odd aspect of the UK equivalent was the almost indecent haste with which UK cities disposed their trams* in the 1940s-60s, and not long after also scrapped the (electric) trolley-buses that used similar overhead supplies but of course did not need rails.

Then only 40 or so years later a few started installing new tram systems, and now all are wondering with what to replace diesel-engined buses!

* Trams. An oddity of trans-Atlantic dialect.

What the Americans call the "street-car" was invented in principle by an American engineer named Outram. The UK name is often said to honour him despite the shortening - but the word "tram", and "tramway", was also used in times past for the wagons horse-drawn along iron rails, in mines and quarries long before engine- or motor- powered public trains and their urban street equivalents.

Many UK trams also used the running-gear named the "Brill Truck", after its also-American inventor.

I believe LA had a very extensive tram system before they replaced it with GM buses
