How people viewed the Volunteers of 1797, when the French were poised to invade. Thank Goodness for Admiral Duncan and the RN

Ever see the movie Barry Lyndon?
Covers a bit of this.

@Ghostinthemachine No - I've hardly seen any movies. Tell me more?
@helensusanswift While not exactly what you’re referring to, it covers roughly the same period. I just saw a scene where the British were trying to recruit volunteers by performing on parade.
Here’s a link, you can scroll down to the plot

@helensusanswift why haven’t you seen many movies?
helensusanswift · 26-30, F
@Ghostinthemachine thank you! I'll have a wee look. I didn't see a TV until I was at secondary school, and bought my first two years ago so I'm anything but knowledgeable about such things.
@helensusanswift probably not a bad thing. Movies have had a big influence on my life.
You never get out to the cinema?
helensusanswift · 26-30, F
@Ghostinthemachine Only bought my first TV a couple of years ago. We never had any money when I was growing up - televisions etc were not essential.
helensusanswift · 26-30, F
@Ghostinthemachine I've been about three times in my life, and never as a child. If you're not brought up with movies, they are not important.
@helensusanswift Marx once said religion was the opiate of the people. That evolved to tv being the opium of the masses.
And now I would argue it’s the internet and screens.
Are you missing much? Debateable.
The question is...are you happy?
helensusanswift · 26-30, F
@Ghostinthemachine Happy? Yes; I am living in a city, and look forward to returning to the country. The TV is on about three hours a week (unless my husband is watching the football) and I am on the computer too often, usually to write or work.
@helensusanswift country and city living both have their appeals and drawbacks.
I think we all have our eyes on a screen too often. Case in point; me, now

@Ghostinthemachine No arguments there!
